Token-based Sequencer

The token-based sequencer concept was inspired by the design of Digital Audio Workstations such as Ableton live. Ableton live is a software which supports a large set of digital tools and sounds for music creation, including a step sequencer tool. The prototype was designed to embody this tool’s interface, using physical tokens in place of its graphical elements. The toy features a rotating turntable with four looping rows, each representing a different note or sound. Coin-shaped tokens are used to trigger these notes and sounds. Children can create and play their own beats by arranging the tokens on the turntable and manually rotating the turntable with a lever.

The prototype was showcased at “De Invasie on display” exhibition at the Design Museum Ghent as part of the Belgian design platform “De Invasie” which supports emerging creative talents and makers.
